An Alternative CAD Tool for Design and Optimization of TDM and WDM Optical Networks

In this paper, we propose a Computer Aided Design (CAD) tool so called HiperionCAD, which allows the design and optimization of Time-Division Multiplexing (TDM) and Wavelength-Division Multiplexing (WDM) optical networks. The tool has been developed by means of the Model-Driven Development (MDD) approach. The HiperionCAD software allows the network visual design and the following computations: Power Budget (PB), Chromatic Dispersion (CD) and Polarization Mode Dispersion (PMD). In addition, we propose an optimization procedure, which is provided as one of the main feature of HiperionCAD. The procedure is based on Genetic Algorithms (GA) and performs an optimization of the total power budget of optical links.
